Kaili City Night Market

Kaili City Night Market

Near the old campus where I have my apartment, there’s a night market.  It reminds me of the markets in Korea, old men playing chess, food stalls full of amazing smells and delicious flavors, people milling around, lovers holding hands…

There was a British-German American back in Yongshuo who lamented the loss of ‘Old China’.  It’s common for expats to get nostalgic about the good ol’ days when they were the only white/different faces around and there was less pollution and people.  I try to remind them that China hasn’t been like ‘traditional China’ since the Cultural Revolution.  Mr. Mao did a pretty good job of erasing a lot of the history in one fell swoop.
